Buddhist Epistemology (Theory of Knowledge)
Buddhist practice concerns realizing mind s true nature. Therefore, an understanding of mind and its workings is imperative. Buddhist Epistemology gives a detailed exposition of all possible states of mind and their functions, as well as the associated referents.
Students study The Treasury of Reasoning Which Establishes Accurate Perception (mtshad ma rigs gter) by Sakya Pandita. The courses cover chapters one through four and nine. The first two chapters define the different types of non- conceptual and conceptual perception as well as their objects. Chapters three and four explain objects of perception based in abstract thought processes as well as perceptions that refer to their objects without the artifice of conceptual mind. The ninth chapter talks about processes of mind where perception interacts directly with its object, seeing it as it is without the distortion that conceptual mind creates. This progressive study provides a thorough presentation of Buddhist Epistemology.
