Statement on the recognition of the 15th Kunzig Shamarpa
Shamar Rinpoche, the esteemed founder of Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers, passed away on June 11, 2014. Rinpoche was the 14th incarnation in a line of Buddhist teachers known as the Shamarpas, dating back to the thirteenth century. As recipients of the 14th Shamarpa Mipham Chokyi Lodrö’s teachings and guidance, the participants of Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers patiently wait for the return of the next Shamarpa.
Shamar Rinpoche was a lineage holder of the Karma Kagyü school of Tibetan Buddhism, and among his many responsibilities was maintaining this centuries-old tradition by recognizing the reincarnation of his own teacher and head of the lineage, the Gyalwa Karmapa. By recognizing and training the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, Shamar Rinpoche ensured that this line of the Buddha’s precious teachings will continue to flourish.
During his lifetime, the 14th Shamarpa established a close connection with His Holiness Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, who has referred to Shamar Rinpoche as his spiritual father.
As holder of the Karma Kagyu lineage, His Holiness Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje’s activities will ensure that the lineage can flourish and thrive for generations to come. It is with great delight that we received the announcement from His Holiness that he has, in accordance with tradition, announced his intention to recognize the 15th Shamarpa.
